Mother Teresa
In 1996 I was hospitalized in Calcutta with a heart attack. A get-well card
from Mother Teresa (pronounced with a long e) was among the many well-wishes I received. Mother
Teresa’s card was the familiar picture of Jesus carrying a lamb, surrounded by a flock of sheep. The card had a hole and an imprint that told me it had been thumb-tacked to a board. On the lamb in Jesus’ arms, Mother had written
the word “you.” On the back side of the card she wrote:
Dear Dr. [name withheld]
Be the little lamb in the arms of
Jesus who loves you.
I will pray for you [to] get well soon.

I had first come to know Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity four years earlier. At the time of my heart attack, Mother Teresa was the leader of more than 3,000 Missionaries of Charity working in at least 100 countries. In the course of her work, she related to thousands of people.
